I love Ann Gimpel's books, she's one of my favourite authors and she always manages to come up with new and different worlds in her books, then populates them with amazing characters and fantastic stories. I originally read 'Roman's Gold', the first book in her Underground Heat trilogy as part of the boxed set which combines shifters, romance, sci-fi and urban fantasy into something very special and exceptionally good. Like a lot of her books, the three Underground Heat stories are written to be read as a series, although as paranormal romances they can easily be read as stand alones. Each has it's own story about a particular pair of true mates with their own happily ever afters and no cliff-hangers, but they do all take place within, and revolve around, the on-going core story, involve the same main characters, and are well written in the third person from the perspective of the Shifter Underground and their fight against the oppression and murder of their people. I really didn't want to put this engrossing book down, and I got so absorbed in the story I felt like I was there and actually knew the characters. Because this is a full-length novel, and I'm not a particularly fast reader, I had no choice but to stop reading at some point, but it was the first thing I reached for each morning and I fell asleep reading it each night. This terrific story grabs you on the first page and just refuses to let go.
'Roman's Gold' is set in the not too distant future, on a version of Earth where shifters have always been commonplace and fully integrated into society, there is a sudden and swift political change which is uncomfortably reminiscent of the Holocaust but with blood records rather than yellow stars. In this case it's humans trying to wipe out shifters, by any means necessary, and two years before the beginning of this book, there was a government edict in the US which declared that anyone with 50% or more shifter blood was no longer considered human. But that didn't stop the authorities from forcing members of the Police force to have 'infusions' without telling them anything about what they were. It was simply made a condition of employment. The Tracker Task Force was created using these unsuspecting individuals, but the plan backfires spectacularly in this first book and they end up completely alienating their own.
Once respected members of society, shifters have seen others of their kind rounded up, imprisoned and tortured, or just outright killed. The authorities have slaughtered thousands and the survivors are running for their lives. 38 year old Devon has been a cop for 15 years and although his own mother was rounded up and died in prison, he remains loyal but transferred to the Berkley PD so he wouldn't have to face his guilt and be shunned by his family. He has shifter blood, but only 25%, not enough to change into anything, but he is one of the cops forced to have the infusions. His new assignment is tracking Kate Roman, a sex surrogate suspected of being a full blooded shifter. But there's something about her scent that baffles him and from the moment he starts following her, he just can’t get her out of his mind. He now has a conflict of conscience to deal with and gets his doctor to refer him to a surrogate so he can spend time with her without blowing his cover. But things don't go as planned and the out of control passion between them leaves Devon with more problems to deal with than he ever thought possible....
I really don't want to give any spoilers about this terrific story or ruin the suspense built into each book, but it's written with humour, edge of the seat action, good guys and bad guys, and some seriously hot steamy bits with a fantastic happily ever after. I absolutely loved it and really didn't want to put it down, but it is a full-length novel and took me several days to read. Well worth more than the 5 star limit and definitely one I'd rescue if the house was burning down.
Ann Gimpel introduced us to a futuristic world where shifters are being hunted, imprisoned and killed. It might sound just like your any other shifter paranormal stories but I like the twist that this is set in a futuristic setting, it has a wee bit sci-fi feeling to it.
I have to admit, it took me awhile to get used to Ann Gimpel's style of writing not that I didn't enjoy the story, I did. So why the 3 stars? Kate, the heroine in this story is a Sex Surrogate. There is a scene where Kate is in session with a client, I'm not so down with that. Then there's Devon, our Hero who also has a scene where he hooked up with a hooker. Again, I'm not so down with that. So if you're uncomfortable with the idea of the MCs having sex with others, then this book might not be for you. It is just one scene for each of them but still, I have a hard time getting past it. Another thing which some might feel icky is that the MCs do have sex in their animal form. So bear this in mind.
Other than what I stated above, this book pretty alright. I do wish there's more character development for both MCs though. The next book is about Max, leader of the Underground. If you have KU account, this book is on Unlimited.

She meets Devon a cop who does not know he can change he has some shifter blood but not enough until the police start giving him shots to better track and bring shifters in to be killed, after they meet he changes for the first time. What is going to Happen?
